i love toko shinoda. these are two of her lithographs from the 1970s, i’ve never seen anything of hers from this series or period before. i love the centrifugal motion in both, the light piece because of the ink spread, the upward tossing motion of the brush stroke, the angular break in the down stroke, the way it fills the space, but the snow piece has a dancerly quality, a kind of concentrated poise, and if you look v closely at the spinning ends the lines have a casual elegance. they really should be a pair displayed together, you know, they each bring out something in the other, alone, they are not quite right. but, if you can only have the one, which would you? (this is not people’s choice painting buying, but i would like to hear from other people their intepretation or feelings about them, to borrow their eyes to clarify my own feelings, to see in a different way.)
