i’d asked absentmindedly for the prosecco (seeing only one on the menu), but the waiter shook his head: which one, there are two, and did you really mean to try the south hill cider? very well, the south hill cider then, who am i to resist its name when dining in ithaca, and in fact, living on south hill. and then later: ‘oh delicious, but is it really brewed on south hill?’ so we look it up and this, in fact: south hill cider. no two year the same. ‘our apples come from wild trees, abandoned orchards and orchards of high quality cider apples.’ he had me at abandonned orchard. (people have me at ‘abandoned’ anythings.) and more! the fingerlakes apple project: ‘We are looking for interesting apple trees around Ithaca. We harvest apples, make cider, and graft old twigs onto new trees to propagate interesting varieties. If you have any trees please contact us.’ i have no trees; but next summer when back in ithaca mayhap a courtesy call on him.
