August 7, 2020 southern literacy test

Open Culture shows you a Jim Crow era Literacy Test administered to African-Americans living in Louisiana in 1964. Test-takers had 10minutes to answer 30 questions; all questions had to be answered correctly or they were denied the righ to vote.

Try it — it’s actually doable, but it’s very difficult within 10 minutes (that is, 20 seconds for each question) and is full of catches. (See the answer key.) Watch also the video where they try out the test on Harvard students, none of whom would be eligible based on this test.
