It’s not that I can’t do serious monogamous relationships — I can, and when I’m in those I’m very committed (it is not a morality issue, it’s an integrity issue.)

But I generally prefer mid- to long-term, sustained relationships that are non-exclusive and no-strings by mutual agreement.

Some of it is just a question of time and timing. Last year, My 2L year, I happened to have a very manageable course schedule, and I had fewer professional commitments than I do now. And by then I’d done a year of Law School, and I made a decision that I wanted to take things a bit easier my second year, make time for personal stuff

My second year, I had a quite manageable course load. Not only that but I made a conscious choice that I wanted to just take things easier my second year. So I had quite a lot of free time, not just date but also be browsing profiles and messaging people and to engage in the ping pong of fliratious banter. And at the time, near the start of my 2L year, two of my then-relationships had come to an end, so I was also keener on meeting new people.

Whereas this year, I’ve got an incredibly heavy course load, last semester was awful and this one I’m in right now is even more exhausting. And this is my final year, so I’ve also got to worry about other things like graduating and the job search and bar exams. And I’ve increased my pro bono work commitments this year. I don’t have either the time or the energy to be spending time on dating sites. I mean, I can still meet new people, if a guy messages me and I think he’s interesting I’d still go out and meet em but, I’m not looking actively myself and I don’t have time to hang around engaging in long back and forths casual flirtatious chattering. We’re grown-ups, not teenagers; if you message me I assume you are interested and I like your profile, then normally I just say, ok shall we meet?

This year I just don’t have that kind of time or energy. My semesters are very heavygoing this year, and it’s also my last year, so I’ve got graduation and job search and bar exams to worry about. I’ve also increased my professional commitments –pro bono work and interning) I’m exhausted And I don’t have either time or energy to spending time on dating sites. I dont even brwose profiles, I look in once every couple of weeks just to clear my messages. If people message me and they seem interesting I generally say let’s meet, and then we see and we take things from there. I dont want to spend a lot of time online just pingponiging with flirtatious 2 line chatter

And some people you meet and it’s obvious there’s no attraction on either side but you get on well enough and you stay friends, there are a couple of these people, usually these are academics, post docs or junior faculty or grad students, I can generaly relate to most of them — attraction or not is a serpate issue, but– i come from that world — i know the rhtythms of that world, their problems and issues and , i can talk about most fields in the hmanites — easy friendships to stirke up and keep up and i generally enjoy these peple And some people are out only for a quick hookup, and you realise that quite quickly, so then it depends. I’m not prudish, and I’m a sex positive person, if they’re attractive sure, why not. but usualy I can’t be bothered

But the kind I’m really looking for is long term but casual relationships that are non-exclusive by mutual agreement Where there is genuine affection and friendship and respect and common interests so you can talk and communicate intelligently in general there’s a course of history it’s not just the sex — its the friendship not much jealousy
we see each other on a regular basis — but not freuqnently we get together now and then
