not a day goes by without someone looking askance when i say i don’t use whatsapp and urging me to do so. i don’t because my phone, which is nearing four years old, doesn’t have the battery life to support background apps. i cling stubbornly to my little red phone, however, because i appreciate that it was made in the days where smartphones had just become ubiquitous: early enough that there was interesting variety on the market in designs (nowadays everyone has the same rectangular white slice), but late enough in the development of smartphone technology that it is still able to do almost anything that a modern phone does. it’s also incredibly small, the size of a credit card, a good 30g lighter than an iphone, and rests comfortably in the pocket of any of my dresses as well as the usual suit i wear to court, with nary a visible bump. most people mistake it for a camera when they first see it. it does all the important things i want a smartphone to when i need it to: sync with my devices, check email, use maps, look up information on the net, tweet, pull out something from dropbox, which is really good enough when i’m on the go. the rest of the time i use it as a simple phone. whatsapp is a small sacrifice considering people can still get hold of me easily in other ways.
