tonight the father made: stir-fried chinese long beans, topped with minced pork marinated with dark soy sauce and lots of sugar (very dark, a little sweet, slightly charred, almost satay-like!), and he added little cubes of steamed pumpkin into the rice (barley and rice).

- give the rice some colour lah, is it nice?
- yes pa, not bad.
- and give YOU some veggies.
- why do you always think i don’t eat enough veggies?!
- you eat too much junk food.
- but students are entitled to eat junk food during exams!

exhausted from this spurt of creativity, however, the rest of dinner was just fried fish and fried fishballs (which i think cancels out the healthiness of the pumpkin and long beans.)
