part 1, hypothetical: a man wants his marriage annulled because he discovered his child is not his: his wife was pregnant by another man at the time they were married — this is the textbook scenario of when you do get an annulment. they cannot live under the same roof; he cannot bear it — after the annulment he wants her gone and to take the child with her. snag. as the eldest son they live with his parents, and they don’t want her gone — she’s been a good daughter-in-law, and they love the child dearly. not our biological grandchild? who cares? how would that be different if it were adopted? besides, they were always opposed to the annullment: keep the family together, whyever not? (yet that is not their decision. and why should their son be forced to stay in a marriage he entered into on false pretences?) the woman pleads the child’s security. the biological father long since buggered off, she cannot raise the child as a single mother — only married mothers have maternity benefits at all. stay married or divorce her, but not annul the marriage. what do you do if you were the man? move out of your parents’ home yourself, while your — not even ex-wife but now-never-was-wife and not-child continues to live with your parents? stay put and live as strangers, and hope (or pressure) her into leaving of her own accord? reconcile and accept the child? what do you do if you were the woman?
