father: i bought a mulberry plant: it’s in the garden. come and see!
me: why? are we going to keep silkworms?


(but really, we used to grow our own papaya, okra, sweet potatoes (we cook both the leaves and potatoes), lime, pandan, lemongrass, aloe vera, mint and basil. i think the father misses the old garden for the vegetables. for me, it is always flowers i desire: rambling roses over the fence, bright crinkled balls of ixora, like the 绣球s of their chinese names, 七里香 jasmines, the washed inkstain blue of bunga telang peaflowers.)
