hors champs on france culture is really something super: from calasso i got onto george steiner (unexpectedly, gratingly americanised — that scarcely seemed possible in such a known polymath of more than just languages) and toni morrison (only to find it was dubbed over; i had hoped she was francophone) and pierre soulages (a completely new discovery thanks to a new french friend) but then i rummaged in the archives a little and found they’d interviewed slavoj zizek also! i’d never heard zizek in french before and had no idea what to expect: how charming! so passionate, so excitable (gabbling at times), and those unexpected train-over-sleeper rattling trills! i’m half-besotted.
