Sometimes, the illustrations in our Evidence Act read rather like nineteenth century flash fiction.

Illustration (f) to s32(1) of the Act (roughly based on the common law hearsay exceptions) says:

The question is whether A and B were legally married.
The statement of a deceased clergyman that he married them under such circumstances that the celebration would be a crime is relevant.

in the radio version, there will be a denouement scene carefully arranged at the end of episode 5 of an 8-part serial (as a cliff-hanger so you have to wait for the monday broadcast) involving the deathbed declaration of a corrupt clergyman, played with great contrition by someone with a philip madoc type of voice, and then 3 episodes to wrap up the jane eyre type ending at a madcap pace.
